Kathleen Hicks: DOD 2022 Budget Request to Focus on Software, Munitions

Kathleen Hicks, the deputy secretary of defense and 2021 Wash100 Award recipient said the Pentagon's 2022 budget request will put more emphasis on munitions and software than large weapon systems, Breaking Defense reported Friday.

She said at the Aspen Security Forum that software and munitions create a critical difference in the military's capabilities. The 2022 defense budget request would serve as early insight reflecting the Biden administration's strategic vision, noted Hicks.

She said the new budget will drive research and development efforts on emerging technologies that can address the country's unmet security needs. The budget submission is expected later this month.

"The budget provides the resources to phase out systems and approaches optimized for an earlier era," she said.
