David Spirk: DOD Working on New Data Policy

David Spirk, chief data officer at the Department of Defense (DOD) and 2021 Wash100 Award recipient, said he is working with DOD's deputy secretary on the new data policy, Nextgov reported Friday. DOD wants to implement new data standards as part of a move to make the department more data-centric.

“We believe a big next step is going to be the issuance of what we're calling data decrees," Spirk said. Kathleen Hicks, deputy secretary of defense and 2021 Wash100 Award recipient, is helping Spirk develop these decrees.

The chief data officer is also developing a plan to help combatant commands access major data programs, in a way that allows these programs to continuously undergo changes as needed. Spirk said he will present this plan to Hicks soon.
