Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks Receives First Wash100 Award

Kathleen Hicks, deputy secretary of Defense, has been recognized for her leadership and drive for innovation and been named to the annual list of Wash100 Award recipients for the first time in her federal career.

Hicks has received her 2021 Wash100 Award for her data prioritization efforts and policy advancements, which will ready the federal defense sector for the future of warfare.

Hicks, a former Department of Defense (DOD) official, was confirmed as deputy defense secretary through a Senate voice vote in Feb. 2021. Prior to her nomination, she oversaw an international security program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Hicks is a member of the U.S. Naval Institute’s board of directors and The Aerospace Corp.’s board of trustees.

During her hearing, she said that she will drive the DoD’s data prioritization, adding that she would lead by using data to inform business decisions. “As we move into an era of data, the department needs to move there too,” she told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

She will also modernize warfighting systems to be more data-centric in new operating concepts. As deputy secretary, Hicks will supervise the Pentagon technology modernization and reform initiatives.
