Roshan Roeder, Northrop Defense Systems President, Named to 2023 Wash100 for Talent Diversity Advocacy & Tech Integration Leadership

Executive Mosaic is honored to introduce Roshan Roeder, a corporate vice president at Northrop Grumman and president of its defense systems sector, as the latest industry executive to be inducted into the 2023 Wash100 list of public and private sector leaders with influence in the government contracting arena.

Roeder assumed her current role in October 2022 and succeeded Mary Petryszyn, a two-time Wash100 winner who retired from Northrop on Jan. 13, 2023, after a decadelong career that includes three years as head of defense systems.

A two-decade Northrop veteran, Roeder leads a 21,300-employee business organization that provides sustainment and modernization support to defense and civilian agencies in technology areas such as tactical weapons, missiles, command and control architectures, directed energy and integrated battle command systems.

The Virginia Tech graduate previously told Fortune magazine that government, industry and academia can work "better together" in building a diverse pipeline of future STEM professionals.

“In order for students or children to believe that they can go into a STEM field, they need to see themselves there. By seeing engineers and technical leaders who are diverse and look like them, there is a natural inclination to feel like it's possible to achieve that themselves,” Roeder said.

Now under her leadership, Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is helping build the U.S. Army's Integrated Battle Command System as part of a five-year, $1.38 billion contract the service awarded in December 2021.

The sector posted $1.66 billion in fourth quarter 2022 revenue, up 20 percent from the prior-year period, and the IBCS program was one of the segment's growth drivers for the quarter.

Prior to her promotion to defense systems president, Roeder was vice president and general manager of the airborne multifunction sensors division under the company's mission systems sector.

She said in a May 9 Breaking Defense article that Northrop applies digital engineering methods to design multifunction sensors with an open architecture.

“Open architecture is the premise upon which we’re building our developmental efforts,” Roeder noted.

“Our architecture lets us take some of our best-of-breed products and enhance them with third-party processing, functional modes/waveforms and networking capabilities to eliminate any concerns around vendor lock."

Executive Mosaic extends its congratulations to Roshan Roeder and the Northrop Grumman team for their 2023 Wash100 win.
