Department of the Navy CIO Aaron Weis Receives First Wash100 Award for Driving IT, Cyber, Cloud Readiness

Aaron Weis, chief information officer for the Department of the US Navy (DON), was presented his first Wash100 Award on Wednesday for leading the guiding principles of the service branch to drive DON’s information technology and cyber readiness goals.

Weis assumed his role with the Department of the Navy in Sept. 2019. He’s led the service branch in the establishment of an information management strategy in a push to address the branch's risk priorities.

"The empowered CIO is chartered with developing and implementing an overall vision and strategy to guide the department over the next five years to modernize our technology; apply current and emerging technology to bring winning transformative capabilities to our Sailors, Marines and civilians; and defend our information by making cyber hygiene and operations a priority," Weis wrote in his introductory column.

Prior to his appointment with the Navy, Weis was instrumental to the strategy and support for the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) as well as the DoD's enterprise cloud and IT modernization efforts.

More recently, Aaron Weis stressed that DON can address its information technology challenges by establishing a “single, unified transport layer” to streamline information sharing between the Navy and Marine Corps. He also suggested implementing cloud-based environments suitable for modern applications and shifting cybersecurity approaches to focus more on iterative protection efforts.

In addition, Weis revealed that the service has made progress in two areas when it comes to strengthening its cybersecurity posture and one of those is from a “defend” perspective. He cited the need to change the service’s perspective on cyber defense.

“They’re refining and returning RMF to be more responsive to reflect current state and to be able to be a more consistent indicator of risk management versus the one and done,” Weis said of the Navy’s reassessment of its risk management framework

Executive Mosaic congratulates Weis and the U.S. Navy for their selection to receive the 2020 Wash100 Award. His commitment to strengthen cyber posture at the Navy and advance defense technology demonstrates his commitment to drive achievement for the government contracting (GovCon) sector.
