AeroVironment’s Wahid Nawabi Earns 1st Wash100 Award for Disruptive Tech Efforts

Executive Mosaic is proud to celebrate Wahid Nawabi, AeroVironment chairman, president and CEO, as a first-time Wash100 Award winner for his work positioning the company as a disruptive technological force and a premier government contractor.
Nawabi has served as the company’s CEO and member of its board of directors since 2016. In that time, AeroVironment has grown its market share through impressive acquisitions, including BlueHalo in May 2025. Adding BlueHalo furthered AeroVironment’s position as a premier worldwide defense technology firm with capabilities ranging in all military domains: air, maritime, ground, space and cyber.
The 2026 Wash100 Award popular vote competition is now open! Vote for Wahid Nawabi and other top GovCon leaders today at Wash100.com.
Why Is Wahid Nawabi Winning a 2026 Wash100 Award?
Nawabi has grown AeroVironment from a small southern California firm founded in the early 1970s and focused on unmet scientific needs, such as solar and human-powered flight, to one of the world’s top technology contractors. He’s driven eight-fold revenue growth and launched multiple award-winning products. The company leads the industry in unmanned aerial solutions, including its Switchblade family of loitering munitions that was selected by the Army for its Lethal Miniature Aerial Missile System requirement.
Nawabi is especially skilled at identifying emerging customer requirements years in advance of official procurements. This includes introducing a new Arkeus Hyperspectral Optical Radar for AeroVironment’s JUMP 20 Group 3 UAS. The HSOR leverages an artificial intelligence-driven data system and rapid environmental assessments to analyze spectral signatures. This allows for the fast assessment of water depth, underground activity and foliage density at all times of day.
“We’re thrilled to celebrate Wahid’s first Wash100 Award—an exciting and well-deserved milestone that highlights his growing influence in GovCon and defense innovation,” said Jim Garrettson, Executive Mosaic CEO and founder of the Wash100 Award. “Under his leadership in 2025, AeroVironment achieved major momentum, including an impressive Army award supporting next-generation counter-UAS interceptor development and an influential Air Force Research Laboratory contract for electromagnetic spectrum survivable materials.”
“Wahid brings a clear vision and deep commitment to delivering cutting-edge capabilities that directly support the warfighter. This inaugural Wash100 honor is a powerful signal of the lasting impact he is poised to make across federal defense missions and the broader GovCon landscape,” Garrettson added.
“I am honored to be named to the 2026 Wash100 alongside such a distinguished group of leaders advancing national security,” Wahabi said. “I thank our 4,000 employees at AV for their dedication to our mission and our customers around the world for trusting us to deliver on critical programs.
“This was a pivotal year for AV as we doubled the scale of our business with the acquisition of BlueHalo and expanded our portfolio into an all-domain defense technology company. I am excited for the opportunities ahead to continue to develop industry-leading defense capabilities and to deliver speed, scale and reliability to the warfighter,” Nawabi continued.
Who Is Wahid Nawabi?
Nawabi was born in Afghanistan and earned an electrical engineering degree from the University of Maryland in 1992. He started his career at APC by Schneider Electric, working his way up to vice president for enterprise. Nawabi also had vice president positions at C&D Technologies and Altergy, a proton-exchange membrane-based fuel cell manufacturer, before arriving at AeroVironment as senior vice president and general manager for efficient energy systems in 2011.
AeroVironment was one of the first companies to donate equipment to Ukraine following its invasion by Russia in 2022. AeroVironment provided more than 100 of its Quantix Recon, a fully automated intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance UAS, to help Ukraine with intelligence-gathering missions.
Even as it expanded into UAS and loitering munitions, AeroVironment under Nawabi has not given up on its roots in solar flight. AeroVironment in 2019 performed the first flight of its HAWK30, a solar-powered high altitude platform system developed in tandem with SoftBank.
The HAWK30 has 10 electric motors with solar panels on its 260 foot-long wings and flies as high as 65,000 feet altitude.
Nawadi believes he has positioned AeroVironment to grow even further under the Pentagon’s new drive for better tapping innovative firms like his and getting advanced technologies into warfighters’ hands even faster. He recently told the Financial Times that the war in Ukraine has demonstrated to the Department of War that it can’t simply prioritize the big primes.
“I do believe it’s going to create more of a momentum, not only for us,” Nawabi said.
What Are Wahid Nawabi’s Recent Career Achievements?
Nawabi regularly makes headlines with impressive contract awards. AeroVironment in November 2025 landed an $874 million Army contract to deliver its Raven and Puma UAS to international customers. This is specifically for the Puma All Environment 3, Puma AE/LE Hybrid, Puma Long Endurance and the Raven.
BlueHalo broadened AeroVironment’s solutions into the space industry. This acquisition quickly paid off when the Space Force in September 2025 issued AeroVironment a contract option to provide a pair of phased-array antenna systems for the Space Rapid Capabilities Office’s Satellite Communication Augmentation Resource program.
“We are delivering unmatched technological superiority to usher in a new era of advanced satellite command and control,” Nawabi said at the time.
Nawabi is known for partnerships with other innovative companies, in addition to his mergers and acquisitions. AeroVironment in January of this year entered into a teaming agreement with Parry Labs to create digital engineering, hardware and software with a modular open systems approach. This is to bolster AeroVironment’s P550 UAS for the Army’s Long Range Reconnaissance effort.
AeroVironment is also teaming with SNC to create an integrated open architecture air and missile defense system for the Golden Dome homeland missile defense effort. The duo will target developing a limited-area defense apparatus that will protect important locations such as ships, bases, airfields and critical infrastructure.
What Does Wahid Nawabi’s Success Mean for GovCon?
Nawabi’s strategy for future success is delivering large volumes of the company’s UAS to its DOW customer. With the unveiling of the company’s new Red Dragon loitering munition system, he told Breaking Defense in May 2025 that the company wants to be able to deliver “tens of thousands” of platforms every month.
“The government is looking to send autonomous platforms in volume and with multiple launchers, so in one hour, we could see hundreds or thousands in the air,” Nawabi said.
