Matt Desch. The Iridium CEO won his 12th Wash100 Award in 2026 for his work winning impressive contracts and growing the company's revenues.

Executive Mosaic is delighted to announce Matt Desch, Iridium Communications CEO and director, as a 2026 Wash100 Award winner for his work winning impressive contracts, growing the company’s revenues and teaming with some of the most innovative companies in the space business.

Desch has an extensive track record of success, having developed Iridium into an industry leader in advanced satellite communications. He has served as Iridium CEO and a company director since 2009.

Desch was previously CEO of the company’s predecessor, Iridium Holdings, from 2006 to 2009. He also served as CEO of Telcordia Technologies, now part of Ericsson, from 2002 to 2005.

“Matt’s 12th-straight Wash100 Award is an extraordinary achievement and a true reflection of the consistency, vision and leadership he brings to GovCon year after year,” said Jim Garrettson, Executive Mosaic CEO and founder of the Wash100 Award. “As CEO of Iridium, Matt has guided the company to become a premier provider of secure, resilient satellite communications that power critical defense, intelligence and civilian missions around the globe.

“The trust federal agencies have in Iridium is exemplified by the remarkable Space Force contract worth as much as $86 million the company received for improved mission-critical satellite communications. Earning this honor 12 consecutive times is no small feat—it reflects the deep confidence the industry places in his leadership. Matt’s steady innovation and mission focus continue to set a remarkable standard across federal contracting,” Garrettson continued.

Why Is Matt Desch Winning a 2026 Wash100 Award?

Desch has an unmatched ability to identify the most innovative technologies in the space industry. Iridium, in May of last year, unveiled a variant of its Iridium 9603 two-way satellite communication system featuring improved transmission security. Designed for use by the U.S. and its allies, this compact module leverages enhanced short burst data for applications including image or data transfer and command and control operations.

New Shipping Partnership

Desch in April of last year developed a novel shipping partnership to protect the company from import tax increases. As part of this partnership, Iridium expanded a European third-party logistics team developed in 2024 to transition almost all non-U.S deliveries from Thailand to avoid being levied U.S. tariffs.

Iridium entered the alternative satellite navigation market in October by announcing its PNT ASIC alternative positioning, navigation and timing product. This is an application-specific integrated circuit designed to provide a worldwide backup to the U.S. Global Positioning System and other global navigation satellite system networks in case of disruptions and offers resilience against jamming and spoofing.

Developed for installation into consumer products and essential infrastructure systems, including telecom networks and power grids, this 8x8mm chip ingests cryptographically-secure location and time data from Iridium’s low Earth orbit satellite network. This network, according to Iridium, projects signals that are 1,000-times stronger than GPS and are able to penetrate buildings.

Teaming With Innovative Companies

Iridium, under Desch, teams with fast-rising firms in the space business. Iridium in May of last year announced it was partnering with Syniverse to deliver direct-to-device, or D2D, satellite connectivity to global mobile network operators. This supports Iridium’s rollout of its Non-Terrestrial Network, or NTN, DirectSM service through its integration with Syniverse’s worldwide platform. This allows GMNOs to provide continuously-connected service.

“We’re building the backbone of the global D2D movement the right way, and with the right partners, as we prepare for on-air testing with MNOs and chipmakers in the coming months,” Desch said at the time. “The integration of Syniverse’s system with the Iridium network will give MNOs a simple path to expand their footprint to the entire planet.”

Who Is Matt Desch?

Desch serves on boards for some of the most well-known companies in GovCon and the federal government. He’s a director and chair of the compensation and human resources committee of Unisys and is a director of VeriSign.

Desch also serves on the President’s National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee. This body develops recommendations to the president to assure vital telecommunications links remain viable through any crisis or event while also helping the federal government maintain a secure, reliable and resilient national communications posture.

Before becoming CEO of Telcordia Technologies, Desch spent 13 years at Nortel Networks, including as president of its global wireless networks business. He has a bachelor of science in computer science from Ohio State University and a master of business administration degree from the University of Chicago.

What Are Matt Desch’s Recent Career Achievements?

Desch is laser-focused on maximizing Iridium’s revenues. Iridium, in February of last year, reported a 5 percent revenue increase, to $831 million, for 2024. It also, for 2024, returned a record $469 million to Iridium stockholders through share repurchases and dividends.

The company also announced in May of last year that it would spend $13 million to move its Tysons headquarters to a larger facility nearby. This larger facility will support 117 additional jobs, increasing the company’s workforce to nearly 400 in the next few years.

Desch, last year, guided Iridium to one of the most impressive contracts in the space communications business. The company landed a five-year, $86 million contract from the Space Force to update and improve infrastructure contributing to the Enhanced Mobile Satellite Services, or EMSS, effort.

Iridium’s work under this System Infrastructure Transformation and Hybridization, or SITH, award, is developing lifecycle upgrades, technology refreshes and security improvements for EMSS service centers, defense ground stations and technical support centers.
