Katy Kale, GSA Acting Administrator, Receives 2021 Wash100 Award for Driving Agency Policies, Technology Transformation Initiatives

This marks Kale’s first Wash100 Award. She was appointed as GSA’s acting administrator in Jan. 2021. Before her current role, Kale was the former assistant to the President for Management and Administration under President Obama and GSA chief of staff.
As acting administrator, she leads a staff of more than 11,200 GSA employees nationwide, overseeing more than 370 million square feet of property, approximately $75 billion in annual contracts, 4.9 million government credit and purchase cards and 225,000 leased vehicles within GSA’s fleet.
Kale drives four key priorities of the Biden Administration, including COVID relief, economic recovery, racial equity and climate. Since her appointment, Kale has driven new initiatives to support the administration’s priorities.
In an interview with NextGov, Kale discussed how she will implement new programs and policies. Kale stated that one of GSA’s major goals is to bolster and advance technology. “Technology is no longer seen as a nice to have, but instead an essential to policy and providing Americans what they deserve,” she said.
Kale also shared her insights on the future of Technology Transformation Services (TTS), the transition from DUNS numbers to unique identity identifier, migration of procurement tools to the beta SAM website, the impact of the SolarWinds breach on the agency’s programs and federal acquisitions and status of e-commerce pilots.
“TTS—which includes 18F, login.gov, the [Presidential Innovation Fellows] and many others—were engaging and we’re listening to our partners. We’re meeting them where they are in this transformational journey and working with them to successfully implement mission critical initiatives,” Kale said.
Recently, GSA announced seven new awards to strengthen the U.S. real estate portfolio, invest in infrastructure and promote economic development. GSA plays a critical role in bolstering economic recovery,” said Kale.
“By creating jobs to design, build and repair our federal properties, in concert with focusing on sustainability and engaging small businesses, GSA is supporting the administration’s efforts to invest in critical infrastructure across the country,” Kale added.
“We are really excited about the work that GSA has ahead; excited to work with our federal government partners, as well as our contractors and suppliers. I think that good things are ahead. We’re excited for them,” Kale stated.
