Executive Mosaic is pleased to announce that Navy Vice Adm. Robert "Bob" Sharp, director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, was selected to the 2019 edition of the Wash100 — Executive Mosaic’s annual selection of the most influential voices in the government contracting arena — for his vision to improve the agency’s capabilities in its use of emerging technologies. This latest honor marks his first Wash100 win.
Sharp succeeds Robert Cardillo as agency director after receiving Senate confirmation in December 2018. He will be elevated to the rank of vice admiral in the Navy.
He assumed command of the Office of Naval Intelligence and became director of the National Maritime Intelligence-Integration Office in 2016. Previously, he served as the assistant intelligence officer for the commander of the Naval Air Force, the intelligence operations officer with the U.S. Fleet Forces Command and director of intelligence and deputy director of the Maritime Operations Center for Commander of the U.S. Naval Force Central Command.
The NGA emphasizes public-private partnerships and workforce initiatives to dramatically improve the agency’s capabilities in emerging technologies including artificial intelligence to reduce analysis time. It also launched a recruitment plan targeting Silicon Valley’s best technical talent as part of the data-enabled workforce strategy.
During his career, Sharp received numerous awards including the Vice Admiral Rufus L. Taylor award for excellence in instruction, the U.S. Army Knowlton Award for Military Intelligence, the Rear Admiral Edwin T. Layton leadership award and the Naval Intelligence Foundation award for excellence in operational intelligence support to the fleet.
He graduated from the University of the Pacific in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in English and was commissioned through Officer Candidate School the same year. He earned his master’s degree from the Industrial College of Armed Forces in 2008.
