HHS CIO Karl Mathias Joins Distinguished Leaders in 2023 Wash100 for Health IT Cybersecurity Vision

Executive Mosaic is honored to introduce Karl Mathias, chief information officer at the Department of Health and Human Services, as the latest government official to be inducted into the 2023 Wash100.

It is Mathias' first selection to Executive Mosaic's annual list of leaders who drive the narrative around the government contracting sector. Vote for him and your other favorite GovCon leaders at Wash100.com.

Mathias was appointed CIO of HHS in March 2022 and oversees a $7 billion information technology portfolio supporting HHS' mission of helping Americans improve their health and well-being.

In an August interview with FCW, the Senior Executive Service member cited acquisition and cybersecurity as his top departmentwide priorities.

"What we are doing is developing a coordinated cybersecurity strategy. This is beyond the zero trust strategy that came down as part of the Executive Order on Improving the Nation's Cybersecurity," Mathias said at the time.

The first-time Wash100 inductee emphasized the importance of enhancing the security of national health IT infrastructure during an Aug. 9 panel discussion hosted by Federal News Network.

According to Mathias, the HHS Office of the CIO office works to protect the country's health IT systems through the Health Sector Cybersecurity Coordination Center and the government-industry 405(d) partnership program.

He added that the department works with more than 230 industry leaders representing hospitals, clinics and pharmacies nationwide in efforts to develop security procedures, guides and best practices for the sector.

Mathias joined the federal civilian service after his 2007 retirement from the U.S. Air Force. The retired lieutenant colonel served as CIO at the U.S. Marshals Service for more than seven years before joining HHS.

Executive Mosaic congratulates Karl Mathias and the HHS organization on their selection to receive the 2023 Wash100 Award.
