Why Did Mark Peters Win the 2026 Wash100 Award?

The Wash100 Award celebrates 100 of the most influential executives shaping the government and government contracting landscape. This forward-looking list of “executives of consequence” honors leaders whose recent achievements, strategic vision and proven impact position them to deliver meaningful results for federal missions in 2026 and beyond.

Peters’ second consecutive Wash100 recognition highlights a year of tangible organizational achievements, high-impact contracts and influential partnerships that reinforce MITRE’s role as a trusted adviser and systems integrator to the federal government.

Since assuming the CEO role on Sept. 3, 2024, succeeding longtime leader Jason Providakes, he has guided MITRE through an era marked by increased demand for secure AI adoption, cyber defense modernization and cross-domain systems engineering.

“Mark’s second-consecutive selection as a Wash100 Award winner is a wonderful reflection of the steady, mission-first leadership he brings to the GovCon community,” said Jim Garrettson, Executive Mosaic CEO and founder of the Wash100 Award. “As president and CEO of MITRE, Mark has a rare ability to bring people together across government and industry to tackle some of the nation’s most complex challenges, as demonstrated in the company’s impressive sole-source contract to continue supporting the Air Force’s National Security Engineering Center.

“MITRE, as a federally-funded research and development center, is one of GovCon’s largest firms focused on intellectual property, technology and strategy with more than 60 sites worldwide and around 10,000 employees. Mark has also led an ambitious expansion of its Tysons facility.”

“MITRE is a significant role and Mark has navigated it through many industry changes with seasoned leadership. His guidance is both trusted and influential, and this recognition highlights the lasting difference he’s making across federal technology and national security,” Garrettson added.

“The Wash100 represents the very best of leadership and mission impact, and it’s a privilege to be recognized alongside leaders whose work is shaping the future. At MITRE, our role is to translate innovation into trusted, scalable outcomes — through systems engineering, applied research, and advanced technology solutions — in service to our nation,” said Peters.

Who is Mark Peters?

Peters brings more than 25 years of executive leadership at premier national laboratories and research organizations. Before joining MITRE in 2024, he served as executive vice president for laboratory management and operations at Battelle Memorial Institute, overseeing governance of DOE and DHS national labs.

His prior leadership roles include director of the Idaho National Laboratory and president of Battelle Energy Alliance, associate laboratory director for Energy & Global Security at Argonne National Laboratory, and leadership positions at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

He has been recognized by his peers through his election to the National Academy of Engineering, his designation as a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society and his service as chair of the National Laboratory Directors’ Council, reflecting his long-standing influence in energy, science and national security.

MITRE’s Achievements Under Mark Peters’ Leadership

Throughout 2025 and early 2026, MITRE released a series of influential reports aimed at strengthening acquisition reform, public-private collaboration and defense innovation.

One analysis outlined practical steps to accelerate innovation adoption at the Department of Defense, highlighting the need to clearly identify mission gaps, leverage flexible acquisition pathways and better integrate commercial technologies. Another report emphasized deeper warfighter involvement in acquisition processes, recommending the development of uniformed technologists and the broader use of agile practices to ensure technology solutions are closely aligned with operational requirements.

MITRE also examined how government agencies can more effectively use publicly and commercially available information, addressing procurement barriers, privacy considerations and integration challenges that affect data-driven decision-making.

In cybersecurity, the organization expanded its D3FEND framework to cover operational technology environments, extending its ontology to strengthen protections for industrial control systems and other physical-cyber assets vital to national infrastructure security.

These initiatives collectively demonstrate Peters’ focus on turning analysis into action—bridging policy, engineering and operational implementation across federal agencies.

Contract Awards & Partnerships

One of the most significant milestones under Peters’ leadership was MITRE’s $584 million continuation contract to operate the National Security Engineering Center FFRDC for the U.S. Air Force.

The award reaffirmed MITRE’s central systems engineering role across the Air Force and broader DoD, supporting missions in cybersecurity, sensors, systems integration and digital engineering while reinforcing its position as a technical backbone for mission assurance and emerging technology adoption.

In a January interview with ExecutiveBiz, Peters explained the evolving role of FFRDCs as “the glue” binding for-profit and nonprofit innovation ecosystems, ensuring breakthroughs in AI, cyber and advanced systems translate into deployable government capabilities.

MITRE also expanded strategic partnerships, including a $20 million NIST investment to launch two AI-focused centers supporting manufacturing productivity and critical infrastructure cybersecurity, with MITRE as a core partner.

Collaborations with NVIDIA and others are advancing secure, interoperable AI-native 6G networks, while MITRE has advocated diversifying allied partnerships to strengthen the defense industrial base.

What Is MITRE?

MITRE is a not-for-profit organization that operates FFRDCs to provide independent technical expertise to U.S. government agencies. Founded in 1958, it supports missions in national defense, aviation, cybersecurity, healthcare and critical infrastructure by delivering systems engineering, research and objective analysis in the public interest. Unlike traditional contractors, MITRE does not compete for contracts; instead, it offers unbiased guidance and long-term technical support.

MITRE plays a key role in the govcon industry by bridging government, industry and academia to accelerate innovation adoption and improve mission outcomes. Through public-private partnerships, research and technology validation efforts, it helps shape policy, strengthen cybersecurity frameworks and guide the integration of emerging technologies, such as AI, into federal operations.

Executive Mosaic congratulates Peters and the entire MITRE team on winning the 2026 Wash100 Award.
