Lt. Gen. Michele Bredenkamp, director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, has been named a 2026 Wash100 Award recipient, marking her debut appearance on Executive Mosaic’s annual list recognizing the most influential leaders shaping the government and government contracting community.

Bredenkamp is being honored for guiding NGA through a pivotal leadership transition, reinforcing integration across the intelligence enterprise and emphasizing data, analytics and industry collaboration to strengthen the delivery of geospatial intelligence in support of national security missions.

Bredenkamp assumed the role of NGA director on Nov. 5, 2025, becoming the agency’s ninth leader during a formal change-of-directorship ceremony attended by senior intelligence and defense officials.

Her debut Wash100 recognition underscores confidence in her leadership at a time when geospatial intelligence is central to defense planning, global operations and interagency coordination.

As NGA director, Bredenkamp oversees the collection, analysis and distribution of GEOINT supporting policymakers and warfighters worldwide. In remarks following her transition into the role, she emphasized the decisive value of geospatial intelligence: “GEOINT, delivered by NGA professionals, provided clarity, understanding, and increased decision advantage for commanders and policy makers.”

She has articulated a commitment to building on NGA’s existing capabilities while advancing the agency’s ability to deliver timely, actionable intelligence at scale.

Who Is Lt. Gen. Michele Bredenkamp?

Bredenkamp brings more than three decades of military and intelligence experience to NGA’s top role.

Prior to becoming NGA director, she served as an adviser for military affairs at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, where she advised on intelligence integration across the Department of War and the broader intelligence community.

She previously commanded the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command, leading one of the Army’s largest intelligence organizations. Her joint assignments include serving as director of intelligence for U.S. Forces Korea, vice director for intelligence on the Joint Staff, and deputy director of program analysis and evaluation within the Army G-8.

Her operational experience includes multiple deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, where she held intelligence leadership roles at both tactical and strategic levels.

A graduate of Spring Hill Jesuit College, Bredenkamp holds master’s degrees from Louisiana State University and the School of Advanced Military Studies at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. She also served as a U.S. Army War College Fellow for the director of the National Security Agency.

Advancing GEOINT Strategy & Technology Modernization

As NGA director, Bredenkamp leads the agency responsible for delivering geospatial intelligence that informs national defense, foreign policy and global security operations.

Under her leadership, NGA continues to oversee major modernization initiatives involving data analytics, enterprise licensing, AI-enabled tools and scalable mission systems designed to strengthen the agency’s GEOINT capabilities.

NGA has awarded multiple large-scale contracts, including the potential $104.3 million Canyonlands contract awarded to ECS to support the development and demonstration of AI capabilities, the SEQUOIA contract valued at $708 million awarded to Enabled Intelligence to provide data labeling-as-a-service for geospatial artificial intelligence and machine learning programs, and a multiyear enterprise license agreement Esri secured to deploy the ArcGIS platform across NGA.

These efforts align with the agency’s strategic objectives of enhancing analytic speed, improving integration across the intelligence community, and delivering secure, mission-ready tools to operators worldwide.

Bredenkamp has emphasized that NGA professionals play a critical role in protecting intelligence sources, safeguarding the homeland and advancing U.S. interests globally. She has stated her intent to rapidly advance NGA’s position as a world-class provider of decisive and actionable geospatial intelligence.
