Why Is Kathy Warden Winning a 2026 Wash100 Award?
Warden earned her latest Wash100 recognition for guiding Northrop Grumman’s efforts to deliver advanced military capabilities at speed and scale while supporting critical national security priorities.
Under her leadership, the company has advanced major programs such as the B-21 Raider strategic bomber and Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile system, while continuing to expand its role in space-based missile warning, tracking and defense architectures. She has also emphasized acquisition speed and manufacturability as key drivers of deterrence.
“Kathy’s 2026 Wash100 Award, her 10th, honors her tremendous work preserving Northrop Grumman as one of the industry’s most cutting-edge providers of essential national security and engineering solutions. The company’s Project Talon, an autonomous aircraft designed to fly alongside manned fighter jets, illustrates her foresight for anticipating upcoming Department of War requirements,” Jim Garrettson, CEO of Executive Mosaic and founder of the Wash100 Award.
“Kathy guided Northrop Grumman to regular notable awards in 2025, including a $304 million deal for F-16 radar components and a contract worth nearly $1 billion for Air Force modeling and simulation. She has consistently delivered results throughout her GovCon career in executive positions at Verdian, General Dynamics and Northrop Grumman. We’re looking forward to Kathy’s accomplishments in the upcoming year,” Garrettson added.
Accelerating Autonomous Systems Through Project Talon
Warden has highlighted the company’s Project Talon as a model for rapid capability development, demonstrating how autonomous aircraft can be designed, built and fielded in less than 24 months. The initiative focuses on scalable production and integration with manned platforms to enable collaborative combat operations.
“We did this on our investment as a demonstration of how quickly we can move, and it’s not just about streamlining the design process,” Warden said in an interview with CNBC. “It’s about building a design that can be quickly manufactured and scaled because we know that mass in getting high levels of capacity in place, so that we can produce at scale is important for the deterrent.”
Supporting Golden Dome Missile Defense Architecture
Warden has also positioned Northrop as a key contributor to the Golden Dome missile defense initiative, which aims to establish a layered homeland defense system integrating existing and emerging technologies.
During the company’s second-quarter fiscal year 2025 earnings call, Warden discussed how Northrop can support the Golden Dome, which she stated will require space-based interceptors and other capabilities.
“We have the ability to work across the entire architecture, and we bring the scale, innovation and research and development expertise that we can apply to each layer of this critical homeland defense initiative,” she noted.
“And we expect Golden Dome for America to be a significant driver of increased budget that would be available to our space sector and everything from space-based interceptors to the broader support to a Golden Dome for America architecture,” the executive added.
By December, Northrop was named one of the companies that would compete for task orders under the Missile Defense Agency’s Scalable Homeland Innovative Enterprise Layered Defense, or SHIELD, contract. SHIELD, a $151 billion vehicle, is one of the contracting mechanisms supporting the Golden Dome.

Advancing Warfighting Capability and Strategic Deterrence
Northrop continues to play a central role in ensuring that the U.S. military has access to advanced defense technologies by supporting programs such as the B-21 Raider. Under Warden’s leadership, the company has expanded production capacity and invested heavily in digital engineering and manufacturing infrastructure to accelerate delivery timelines.
Beyond the B-21, Northrop has secured a range of contracts that further reinforce its position across air, space, missile defense and electronic warfare missions. The company was selected by the Space Development Agency to support the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture’s Tranche 3 Tracking Layer, a multibillion-dollar effort to deploy missile warning and tracking satellites in low Earth orbit to strengthen global missile defense.
Northrop has also expanded its role in uncrewed and collaborative combat aircraft through a $231.5 million agreement with the U.S. Marine Corps to integrate autonomous mission systems with Kratos’ Valkyrie platform. The effort is designed to extend sensing, strike and survivability capabilities in contested environments while enabling operations alongside crewed aircraft.
In electronic warfare and aircraft survivability, the company continues to deliver capabilities such as the AN/ALQ-251 radio frequency countermeasure system under a U.S. Air Force contract, enhancing protection against advanced radar-guided threats for U.S. and allied aircraft.
Northrop is also supporting the Pentagon’s Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control vision through a Navy contract focused on delivering resilient, interoperable command-and-control technologies.
