Cameron Stanley Wins 1st Wash100 Award for Advancing Applied AI at Department of War

Cameron Stanley, chief digital and artificial intelligence officer at the Department of War, has been named a 2026 Wash100 Award winner, earning his first recognition in Executive Mosaic’s annual list of the most influential leaders in government contracting and the federal sector.

The Wash100 Award is a forward-looking accolade honoring the executives and officials most likely to shape GovCon and drive impact across the American mission in the year ahead.

Who Is Cameron Stanley?

Cameron Stanley currently serves as CDAO at the Department of War and senior official for Pentagon’s the applied artificial intelligence critical technology area, or CTA. In that role, he is responsible for leading the department’s adoption of data, analytics and AI to generate decisive warfighter advantage across all domains.

Prior to his current position, Stanley served as national security digital transformation lead at Amazon Web Services. There, he helped advance mission-focused cloud and AI capabilities for defense customers and strengthened industry partnerships, including work with Lockheed Martin to demonstrate advanced cloud-based communications for military networks.

Earlier in his career, Stanley held senior government roles including chief of Project Maven, where he led the DOW’s largest AI algorithm development and deployment effort. He managed a cross-functional team of 52 and oversaw more than $400 million in R&D funding to deliver an end-to-end agile data analytics and AI platform.

He also served as AI development and oversight lead for the under secretary of war for intelligence and security, where he built the first intelligence-specific large language model development platform, saving tens of thousands of man-hours while improving analytic output quality across the enterprise. Stanley began his military career as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.

Why Is Cameron Stanley Winning the 2026 Wash100 Award?

Stanley is being recognized for accelerating the War Department’s applied artificial intelligence agenda and translating strategy into operational capability.

In January, the Office of the Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering announced Stanley as the senior official leading the applied artificial intelligence CTA, one of six priority technology areas designed to maintain American military dominance. In this role, he is charged with driving tangible AI “sprints” that move capabilities from concept to fielded systems.

His career has consistently focused on bridging innovation and execution. From standing up AI execution plans at U.S. Southern Command to leading Project Maven’s algorithmic warfare initiatives, Stanley has demonstrated an ability to align technology development with real-world mission requirements.

What Are Some of Cameron Stanley’s Recent Career Achievements?

Stanley’s recent trajectory underscores his rising influence across both government and industry.

At AWS, he worked to modernize national security workloads and align commercial innovation with federal mission needs. In government, he led AI development and oversight for a $4 billion intelligence enterprise, aligning disparate efforts and serving as the U.S. lead for AI development and data-centric techniques across domestic and international organizations.

As chief of Project Maven, he oversaw vendor selection, technology roadmaps and congressional engagement for the War Department’s flagship AI algorithm program, ensuring cost-effective resource execution and rapid capability deployment.

Earlier roles at U.S. Southern Command, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and DARPA further strengthened his experience in international collaboration, technology transition and operational S&T strategy.
