Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX President and COO, Named to 2017 Wash100 for Flight Return & Space Transportation Leadership

Executive Mosaic is honored to introduce Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX president and chief operating officer, as an inductee into the 2017 edition of the Wash100 — Executive Mosaic’s annual selection of influential leaders in the government contracting arena.

Shotwell joined Elon Musk’s SpaceX outfit in 2002 as vice president of business development after time at Torrance, Calif.-based space company Microcosm.

“You could characterize all the early leaders at SpaceX as being very knowledgeable about the industry but wanting to change things dramatically and get the industry moving at a much faster pace,” Shotwell said in April 2014 for an interview with Satellite Today.

Hawthorne, Calif.-based SpaceX returned to flight in January with the launch of an initial 10 Iridium Communications satellites from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California nearly four months after a Falcon 9 rocket exploded on the launch pad at Cape Canaveral in Florida.

SpaceX expects a mid-June launch of the second NEXT batch in a bid to complete Iridium’s eventual 81-satellite second-generation constellation by 2018.

Shotwell told Reuters in February that SpaceX aims to deploy its Falcon 9 rockets every two to three weeks after the company unveils a new launch pad at NASA‘s Kennedy Space Center.

Also in 2016, NASA awarded SpaceX a task order to further develop its Crew Dragon spacecraft intended to transport astronauts to the International Space Station under the company’s $2.6 billion Commercial Crew Transportation Capability contract awarded in 2014.

Shotwell said at the time SpaceX looks to send astronauts to ISS in 2017.

SpaceX will also deploy a NASA technology module that will work to demonstrate autonomous rendezvous in space as part of the company’s 10th commercial resupply mission to ISS.

Executive Mosaic congratulates Gwynne Shotwell and the SpaceX team for their selection to receive this award.
